Overview & applications

When to use XRM / Micro-CT in an engineering investigation

XRM / Micro-CT helps engineering and research teams investigate internal pores, cracks, inclusions, and voids, wall thickness, geometry, and internal assembly features, 3d morphology and defect distribution without sectioning with a lab-ready scope. TESTDOG can help translate an unclear request into the right imaging route, sample preparation notes and reporting requirements.

Use this page as a starting point for deciding whether XRM / Micro-CT is suitable before requesting a quotation.

What this test can help you understand

Internal pores, cracks, inclusions, and

Assess internal pores, cracks, inclusions, and voids as part of a lab-ready investigation scope.

Wall thickness, geometry, and internal

Assess wall thickness, geometry, and internal assembly features as part of a lab-ready investigation scope.

3D morphology and defect distribution

Assess 3D morphology and defect distribution without sectioning as part of a lab-ready investigation scope.

Samples & requirements

Suitable samples and what to prepare

Typical sample types

  • Small components and assemblies
  • Porous materials, foams, ceramics, polymers, batteries, rocks, and composites
  • Samples requiring non-destructive inspection

Submission requirements

  • Reference guidance indicates maximum sample size about 300 mm and weight below about 25 kg for general testing
  • For high-resolution testing with voxel resolution <=1 um, sample width and thickness should ideally be around 1 mm for best imaging quality
  • Animal tissue samples should be fixed at 4 C with glutaraldehyde or paraformaldehyde to prevent internal degradation
  • Different material densities have different X-ray penetration thickness limits, ranging from millimetres to centimetres
  • State whether local zoom-in, vertical stitching, 3D rendering, porosity, wall-thickness, or simulation-ready output is required
